My Wokingham - News & Events For Wokingham 23/06/2024 11:48 am

Exclusive interview with Lucy Demery Wokingham’s Conservative Parliamentary Candidate by My Wokingham's Nick Marr
Lucy takes over from Sir John Redwood who was the MP for Wokingham from 1987 to
2024. John has decided not to seek election at the general election on 4th July 2024.
Nick spoke to Lucy during the D- Day commemorations in Wokingham Town. When asked more about her and the reason she was there Lucy Demery said:
“I here today, joining the community by Wokingham Town Hall for the D-Day
commemoration. It’s a very moving group here. My father actually served in the Royal Air
Force, so I’m a big believer in public service and commemorating those who sacrificed so much to defend our freedoms from tyranny.”
We asked Lucy to provide some more insights into who she was. She said: “So I’m a mum, I’m a local campaigner and a community volunteer. I do a lot of volunteer work in the community, particularly with the likes of the Citizens Advice Bureau and on
environmental conservation projects.
“I also have a lot of experience in business. I’ve worked as a managing director in
fintech, financial technology. But I’ve put that aside now to campaign full time and to
be your Member of Parliament full-time. This is what I’m really focused on right now.
“We’ve had a really busy start to the campaign, meeting constituents on the doorstep, at community events like this, and it’s just been such a warm and wonderful reception.
Thanks, everyone, for your kindness, and I look forward to meeting more of you on the
campaign trail.”
We asked why someone should vote for Lucy rather than the other main party in
Wokingham. She explained: “I’m really focused on investing in a vibrant local economy, drawing on that business experience and supporting our local services, which I think have been undermined by their local Lib Dem council over the past couple years. And protecting our green spaces, which are also at risk, because the Lib Dems at the council level haven’t updated our local plan. So, we’ve got this threat of overdevelopment on our green spaces and on our floodplains. I grew up on a nature reserve, so I’m really determined to protect our local environment.”

Wokingham Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Lucy Demery Interview by My Wokingham Elections 2024

My Wokingham - News & Events For Wokingham 06/06/2024 1:41 pm

My Wokingham's Nick Marr spoke to Lib Dem Leader Sir Ed Davey during his visit to the Borough of Wokingham. In an interview that took place by the River Loddon in Wargrave Lib Dem leader spoke about the temporary nationalisation of Thames Water and placing companies like Thames Water in a Special Administration Regime and eventually turning it into a PUBLIC BENEFIT CORPORATION

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has unveiled his perspective on the management of failing water companies such as Thames Water. In an exclusive interview with My Wokingham, conducted alongside the serene banks of the River Loddon in Wargrave, a constituent area of the newly formed Thames Ward of Wokingham Borough, Davey addressed the issue of nationalising Thames Water.

"Liberal Democrats have been campaigning on the sewage problem and the flooding problem for a number of years now, trying to get the conservative government and MPs to listen, and to take it seriously, and I really regret that they haven't.

They've allowed the water companies to continue giving huge dividends to their shareholders and not investing in the infrastructure and not sorting out the sewage problem. And we've now come to this moment when, companies like Thames Water are on the brink, of a financial catastrophe. And that's hitting not just the water industry, but the UK PLC, our our our country," expressed Davey.

Leader of Lib Dems Ed Davey Interview on Nationalising Thames Water

My Wokingham - News & Events For Wokingham 29/04/2024 12:19 pm

My Wokingham speaks to Rueben Miles-Brar owners of Londis Red Oak Stores and Bobs Fish n Chips. The business has been hit hard by the roadworks outside its shop at the junction of California Crossroads Finchampstead Wokingham.

The cost of the project is reportedly £5.4 million and started February 12th 2024 the project currently has two spurs of the four spurs shut and greatly reduced access to the area.

William Brown explains that these businesses are at the centre of the community, providing vital local services to residents of Finchampstead, including the local Post Office. They desperately need support to survive this shift in circumstances well beyond their control. Despite this, WBC has failed to compensate the shops for the loss of business directly caused by the Council's actions.

He emphasised that local residents who will be most affected should we lose these services permanently due to the downturn in trade, it is essential that we now intervene and call on WBC to change its position and compensate the businesses at California Crossroads, either directly or through significant reductions in rates, for the crippling loss of trade caused by the redevelopment.
